Changing institutional culture and practice: reflections on recent developments in Welsh-medium higher education
In addition to providing a detailed look at work done to promote Welsh-medium higher education at one institution (Bangor University), this talk will consider the national context in Wales. A brief history of Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol will be presented along with an analysis of ways in which this National Welsh-medium College has worked with a range of universities in order to develop provision. While achievements will be described, challenges and unresolved problems will be addressed as well. It will be argued that, while concrete questions involving policy and provision are key, a challenge which on the surface appears ‘softer’ and more abstract – changing institutional culture – is just as important.
