‘No Man is an Island’

My paper will set out my experiences as a practitioner in the following contexts: in Higher Education working with multilingual graduate students; in the profession of teacher of languages; as a writer, poet and translator; and advisor to the All Party Parliamentary Group currently making recommendations to the government of future languages policy in the U.K. I will look at the assumptions made concerning the use of English in a multilingual context, and its application in practice; how non-native speakers experience using English at an advanced level and what HE can learn from enhancing and drawing on their own linguistic backgrounds; and the concomitant necessity for fostering the learning of foreign languages in an English-speaking environment. Finally I will look at the direction future government policy is being recommended to follow and the possible outcomes if this is successfully achieved.
